On the Road to Motherhood

This blog started in October 2003 when I found that in another 8 months I will become a mommy. The purpose of this blog was to document my pregnancy. In June 2005 I restarted this blog to document my second pregnancy. My second child is now three months old. I am restarting this blog yet again to keep in touch with friends and family and to complain about life.

We had a visit from our Speech Therapist last Thursday. Here is a part of her report on Little Munchkin.

Assessment: using the Hanen Checklists of Communication & Conversation, the Derbyshire Rapid Screening Test of comprehension, vocabulary update, observation of play and learning skills.

Little Munchkin understands a wide range of single words across the range of grammatical structures of labels/nouns, descriptive/adjectives, including colours, hot/cold, wet/dry, every day action words/verbs, location words including in and on, social words including bye, hello, no.

He understands a range of 2 information carrying word level instructions and phrases e.g. ‘put the spoon in the cup’, ‘put the shoe in the box’, ‘show me the big bear’, where there are choices of these objects /big and little animals offered.

His understanding is concrete and in the here and now. He is having difficulty with more abstract concepts e.g. big/small, tall/short, feelings, more complex action words.

He is not yet responding to any questions e.g. ‘what’s this, where etc.

Little Munchkin communicates using words, jargon and some 2 word phrases.

Little Munchkin sometimes communicates using pulling his mothers hand towards something he wants, and might say ‘apple juice’ more grapes’,’ more swing’ or if he can get it himself he will do so. His motivation to communicate, or his need to involve others in things he is doing is reduced.

He can point to pictures in books or objects he is interested in.

He imitates actions previously seen, e.g.brushing his hair, sweeping with a broom.
Little Munchkin has some emerging pretend playing when supported by an adult e.g. pretending to feed himself, and then a teddy when prompted.

He has a wide vocabulary of single words, but is not consistent in using them and finds it difficult to generalise the use of words he knows to new/different contexts. He uses a lot of scribble talk/jargon where the occasional word can be recognised. His mother understands him about 60% of the time. He is difficult to understand to those who are not familiar with him. He uses ‘no’ to good effect if he does not want to do something.

His mother reports that he is more likely to be interested in things if you talk about the colour and his mother describes an obsessive interest in the colour yellow.
He can count to 100 and has an understanding of number correspondence up to 5.

Litte Munchkin is copying and repeating back words and phrases that he hears, and is noticeably more intelligible when he copies.e.g.’open door’,’ brush her teeth’, time for bed. He spontaneously said ‘mummy’s pocket’, ‘bye Janet,’ bye Maisy’.
Little Munchkin does not ask any questions.

Little Munchkin’s current interests at home are watching TV, painting, sharing books, playing pop up dragon with others or by himself, and playing outside.

Summary and Recommendations.

Little Munchkin is showing a mild-moderate delay in his play skills, with little interest in pretend play, in his understanding of spoken language, and in his expressive and spoken language. Little Munchkin mostly has his ‘own agenda’ style of communication, preferring to often initiate, and not so frequently responding. His looking for communication at people’s faces is best when he understands and anticipates the routine. He shows that he is a visual learner with a good visual and auditory memory.

His development is around a 2 years 4 month level in understanding, expressive skills and play skills. He is also showing reduced motivation in his social communication and in his desire to approach others to share communication, in association with this developmental delay, and possibly as part of a wider developmental difficulty. He awaits a multidisciplinary team assessment at the XXXXXXX Children’s Centre.

Yesterday I was trying to explain to Big Munchkin that today is mama's Christmas. This is a bit of that conversation:

- You see, Munchkin, tomorrow we celebrate a birth of baby Jesus.
- What is a birth?
- It is his birthday - that day when he was born.
- Will we have a party?
- Yes, we will.
- Is he coming?
- Who?
- Jesus .... It is his birthday ...
